Hey. What's going on?

How's new TIUAs? Are they cool like me? (Kidding...)

Oops,,, I haven't update this in one month. hmm,,, I don't know why. I was just a bit busy.

Well, what should I write about?
About my birthday!!
On Feb 5th. The day was my 20th birthday. I had party with my hometown friends. We went to boring, karaoke, batting center and finally Japanese bar. It was really fun.
I got some presents from my friends. Presents were some baseball stuff and many snacks and Japanese traditional stuff, because they thought I bacame American. haha
Next day (Feb 6th), I went to my favorite band (GLAY)'s concert with my best friend, Yuichiro. Hm? sounds like "You Ichiro". haha. But yeah. His name sounds like "You Ichiro!" I had been there concert twice before the day. And the day was best seat ever. The concert was so great!! I was CRAZY!! haha. After I came back home from concert, I was happy again. I got many e-mail and birthday messages from American friends. Because Feb 5th in America is Feb 6th in Japan. Understand?? Japan is 17 hours earlier than America.

About after my birthday.
I still haven't started college yet!! yey!! It will start on April 14th. I still have vacation more than one month. yey!!
I started to haunt English conversation school from few weeks ago. I could chat with you guys then I never forget English. But I want to speak English really fluently. So I decided to go there. The school is good. Of course, I still really want to chat with you guys. Already sometime I did. It was really fun time for me. So keep in touch!!
Also I still go to driving school. In Japan, we have to go to driving school many times maybe about 40 times. So my driving school doing well. I love driving but I still can't get driver's licence... I hope I can get it before restart college. But, this time many people go to driving school, because of high school students who are before graduate.

ok.
I'll write this again and again like I did for "The Collegian". It was about once every two or three weeks. So, please check this sometimes.

Crazy-Masa.

Hey, what's up?
I'm fine and busy even I haven't school yet. Are you jealous? haha.
I'm working at convenience store about 3 or 4 days in a week. It's not so busy.
I sometime work early morning, I have to get up about 5 am. crazy!!
I sometime work late night, I have working until 11:30 pm. crazy!!
So I'm still crazy!! Are you secure? haha.

I started to go to driving school from last week.
I think it has some differences about how to get driver license between America and Japan. I don't really know American way. But I think Japanese way is more difficult than American way. It takes at least 3 month to get license in Japan. We have to go school many times. But I really want to get license, and driving like crazy!! Danger!!

By the way, do you know the movie "Hotel Rwanda"?
I watched the movie last Wednesday at movie theater. I know the movie released many countries in few years ago. But, Japan didn't. But many Japanese people subscribe to release the movie. Then few movie theaters subscribe "Hotel Rwanda" since few weeks ago in Japan. But it's still few,,, I hope many people should watch.
Anyway, I like the movie. It's good movie also so sad. Actually, I watched the movie at Smith Auditorium. It might be sometime in March or April. I remember it was before summer vacation, because I watched the movie at Smith with Jacob (Swenson). After movie I cried. It was my first time, I cried in the U.S. (;_;)

Oh,,, I should write about SEAHAWKS!!!
You know, I love sports. I love Seattle. So I love Seattle Seahawks!!!
We could watch some American sports like NBA (basketball) or MLB (baseball) or NFL (football) on Japanese TV. So I know Seahawks will play the Super Bowl on my 20th birthday. Feb 5th is my crazy 20th birthday!! "20 years old" represent "adult" in Japan. No more crazy kid, I'll be crazy adult!!
Actually, I really want to watch Super Bowl with you!! But I can't. Oh no... But I'll watch it in Japan. I had good luck for Seattle teams. I went to Super Sonics basketball game 1 time, then they won. I went to Mariners baseball game 7 times, then they won 5 times. I really hope they will win!! They'll get champion that is great birthday present for me!!

This is my birthday plan.
Now it is at 22:25 pm on Feb 4th in Japan.
Tomorrow, I'll have party with my hometown crazy friends.
6th morning, I'll watch Super Bowl. 6th morning (Japan) is 5th afternoon (America). Our time is 17 hours diffrent, Japan is 17 hours earlier than your time.
6th night, I'll go to my favorite Japanese music band's concert. Their name is "GLAY".
I'll have really fun birthday!!!

Talk to you soon!!
Crazy-Masa.\(^o^)/

Baseball and Yakyuu

Before you read this, you should read last article.
Do you think can I get 50,000,000 dollars? How is this??

Baseball and Yakyuu
Masahiro Suzuki

“Ichiro, Ichiro, Ichiro….” The stadium was filled with cheers and excitements when he showed up in the field. It was a thrilling moment at the Safeco field in Seattle. I went to Seattle to watch the Mariners play seven times. I studied at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon for a one year study abroad program last year. I noticed some differences and similarities between Major League Baseball and Japanese professional baseball. In this article, I will write about the historical relationship between them, what I observed at the games, and the responses of two American friends’ regarding their perspectives about the American and Japanese baseball cultures.
Lately, some great Japanese baseball players have flourished in Major League Baseball each year since Hideo Nomo signed to Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995. For example, Nomo achieved no-hitters twice in 1995 and again in 2001. Another example of a great player is Ichiro Suzuki. He started to play for the Seattle Mariners in 2001. In his first year, he won the most valuable player award, and in 2004 he set the single season hit record with 262 hits. The record was previously held by George Sisler with 257 hits which occurred 84 years ago. He has and continues to receive many awards and broke numerous records that many people did not think he could.
I usually go to watch Japanese professional baseball at least five times a year. Major League Baseball and Japanese professional baseball has a few similarities and some differences. The biggest similarity was the style of the game. Both countries pitching have changed dramatically. Years ago, it was a common that starter pitch a complete an entire game in both baseball leagues. However, now it is the mainstream that teams utilize a starter, setup, and closer. I was surprised when I noticed some of the differences. For instance, it was how fans choose to cheer. In Japan, both teams have a cheering section. All teams have a cheering organization. They sit in the out field seats, and they cheer with big flag, musical instruments and some kinds of noise maker. It surprised me when I watched the Mariners game in Seattle. Most all of the seats were full of Mariners fans. On the other hand, at Japanese games, right field seat are for the home team’s fans and left field seats are for the guest team’s fans. When I watched baseball game at Japanese stadiums, I felt a lot of distance between player and us. However, in the American stadiums I felt connected to the players, like I was a part of their game. I could see the words such as “make a noise” or “Louder” on the screen when the home team had chance, then they shout out. So their baseball is more like entertainment. I think it is because of the differences in their stadium. Japanese baseball stadium have high fence and many nets. I think Japanese stadiums do not have originality.
I interviewed Rick Lund and Daniel Carroll about baseball. I met Rick last summer and he is a sports editor for the Seattle Times. My friend introduced me to him when I mentioned that I love for sports, I am interested in journalism, and I’d like to be a sports journalist in the future. Daniel Carroll is a Willamette University student. He was my roommate when I was at Willamette. He is from Seattle, and he is a big Mariners fan.
First, I asked them about why Safeco Field has so many Japanese fans. Rick said, “Probably a couple of reasons. First, there is a significant Japanese population in Seattle. Because the team is owned by Nintendo, the Mariners have aggressively pursued players from Japan. Mac Suzuki was the first. The signing of Ichiro has brought even more Japanese fans to Safeco Field. Now the Mariners have a Japanese catcher. I think the Mariners' organization is very much interested in having a Japanese flavor. I know they were supposed to open the 2002 season in Tokyo, but it was cancelled because of terrorist threats left over from 2001.” Daniel said, “I think Safeco Field has been a big tourist attraction that brings a lot of Japanese people every year because of the players on the Mariners. Since 2000, we had Kazuhiro Sasaki, then Ichiro, and Shigetoshi Hasegawa. The team has been trying to help visitors from Japan out by posting signs and directions in Japanese, and also having a small sushi restaurant near the bullpens.”
When asked what his image of Japanese baseball is, Rick said, “Only what I have seen in American movies. I saw one starring Tom Sellick. I don't know much about it, but the image I have --from that movie -- is fans bringing a lot of noise-makers to the game. They made noise throughout the game. I guess I have long had this image that Japanese baseball is inferior to American baseball. But I think some of the Japanese players in recent years have dispelled that myth a little bit. I also have this image that the Japan league is a pitching-oriented league.” Daniel said, “It seems to me that a lot of pictures I have seen of Japanese baseball have been with artificial turf, or the infield was entirely dirt, instead of in the United States, where teams take a lot of time taking care of their field, cutting grass to proper lengths or cutting it in such a way that there is a checkerboard design. I think I like the American way of preparing the baseball field, but that's probably because I live here, and have seen it more often.”
Finally, I asked them if they had any opinions about the differences they see between American and Japanese baseball. Rick commented, “I would say U.S. baseball has more power hitters than Japan. It seems like most of the American players that played in Japan in their later years were home-run hitters, so maybe that's what Japanese managers feel their teams needed, more power.” Daniel commented, “I’m often told that Japanese baseball is a little better than Triple-A Minor League Baseball, which is the second-highest level of professional baseball in the United States. As we've seen with Ichiro and Hideki Matsui, Sasaki, and Hideo Nomo, is that if you can excel in Japan, you should be able to do well in the U.S.. Because of this, I'm looking forward to watching Kenji Johjima with the Mariners this season.”
After listening to their comments, it seems that interest in Japanese baseball started to be seen among American baseball fans, and especially for Mariners’ fans, there seems to be a big hope in Johjima’s promotion. He is a first Japanese catcher in Major League Baseball. I have big hopes for him too. But I think he will have some problems, because the position of catcher is the most important position in terms of communicating with other players and coaching staff. As catcher his English skills will be tested. Johjima is a pioneer as a catcher play in Major League Baseball, and I do not know any foreign players who had played catcher in Japanese professional baseball. But I believe he will be successful in Major league baseball similar to the success off other Japanese players just as Nomo or Ichiro have shown. I think Johjima had passed many problems before.
In conclusion, I hope yakyuu which means baseball in Japanese, will be getting livelier in Japan. The Japanese professional baseball league should protect the original cheer style with big flags and some musical instruments, but also follow the Major League Baseball strong aspect like management and fan services. Japanese baseball has encountered some problems in the last few years. They have lost fans due to Japanese players joining the Major League. This problem does not happen in America. However, Major League has had problems that Japanese baseball does not, such as the use of steroids. I hope both countries’ baseball will be better in the future and their relationship, originality, and history will continue forever.

Because I had a assignment for English article competition.

What is the article for?
The Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship is an annual scholarship award by the
Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ) that was created in honor of
a respected long-time journalist member of FCCJ to encourage and support
university students, who are interested in entering the foreign journalism
field.
The first place prize will be 500,000yen (50,000,000dollars) Wow!!!
second place prize will be 300,000yen (30,000,000dollars) and third place
prize will be 200,000yen (20,000,000dollars).

This article topic was any topic that we wanted. So my topic was "baseball and yakyuu". Yakyuu means baseball in Japanese. So I wote about comparison between American baseball and Japanese baseball.

Some friends helped my article for check my English. Actually, it was difficult to choose who should I ask? I asked 4 friends and my uncle. 4 friends were Bryan, (He helped my job IM journalist. He made the job for me.) Katherine, (She helped some articles that I wrote for The Collegian.) Christy, (She is a sports editor for The Collegian. She helped all my work in fall.) Rose (She recommended for me to attend Journalistic Writing class in fall. So I attend the class, although, I didn't have enough TOEFL(Test Of English as a Foreign Language) score to take the class.) and my uncle (He is Japanese. He can speak English fluently. He is a photographer of sailboat. He works in many countries.)

Also, in my article, two friends helped my article. They are Rick and Daniel.
One month in Japan!!

What's up, dude?
I'm great!! No more cough!!
I came back to Japan on Dec 19th 2005. So it pasted one month.
I had many fun happened like saw again Japanese friends, go to Karaoke, and chat with American friends!!(^u^)

Well, I should write about "Coming of age ceremony". 20 years old is very important age for Japanese people. After becoming 20 years old we could do everything... (ex: election, drinking, gamble, if they commit a crime media release thier name.) Oh, but I have a low alcohol tolerance. I won't ganble with much money, I won't commit a crime.
Anyway 20 years old means adult. Every year, in January, we have Coming of age ceremony, which call Seijinshiki in Japanese in each home town.
When coming of age ceremony, all ladies wear kimono (hmm... how to explain?? Look at my facebook photo.) Few men wear hakama (like Kazu's clothes. I hope you know Kazu...) most men wear suit. I wore suit and Mariners tie(same as TIUA closing ceremony).
The ceremony were fun (little boring), listen to speech from mayor or some people, and our junior high school teacher (the part was fun). Before and after ceremony, I could see many my hometown friends. No TIUA friends in my ceremony. But some friends knew I went to the U.S. I hadn't seen many friends since I was 12 years old when I was CUTE, I mean I graduated elementary school.
After ceremony, I went to Japanese bar and drank (little, haha) and Karaoke to sing (a lot, haha)
I added my pictures on my Facebook.
Oh, but actually I'm not 20 years old yet. I'll be 20 soon (Feb 5th). Should I go back to the U.S. that day? then could you take me Mill Stream?? Why did I go to "coming of age ceremony" although I'm not 20. I'll write answer after in this journal. So please read this till end.

I heard all of you start new semester, right?
I DON'T HAVE SCHOOL UNTILL APRIL!! I went to TIU (my college) once after I came back. It was last Friday. Then I could saw TIU friends (both TIUA friends, and friends who didn't go to TIUA). I had interview test for my next year seminar class. I passed my first hope. The semener is about ... Can you guess? Yes, it is about journalism. I could study journalism hard, them become sports journalist, then I'll go to the U.S., interview Ichiro, of course see you again!!Yey!!

Do you know Japanese school system? College is different from junior high or high school. But I'll write about college school system today.
Our school start in first week of April. It start new year of school. We have two semester which is 1st semester and 2nd semesterin in a year. 1st semester is from April to end of July. 2nd semester is from end of September to first week of February. During 1st semester, it has short successive holidays in first week of May. During 2nd semester, it has Christmas and new years holidays about 2weeks.
Why I didn't have school now? Because before I went to TIUA I have school (exam) till just 5 days before I left. Then we started (TIUA) Spring semester soon after we got. Then TIU friends didn't have school. So now they have school. TIUA students were no school. It's equality.

Ow, it became long.
I have to go now. I'll hang out with TIUA friends today. I will go to Karaoke with Suguru, Manami, and Ai(Motoda). It will be fun... I should take a picture then add on my facebook.
Bye-bye.

Masahiro-crazy-kun!!(#^.^#)

How are you doing evrrybody? I'm great.
Sorry, I didn't update in few days. But I have many things that I want to say to you guys.

Here, I'll write about January 2nd.
Hey guys. Do you know "Ekiden"? It is a sports which is long distance relay race.
Well, I'll put article about "Ekiden" from wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekiden
So Japan has big college ekiden race. Name of the race is "Hakone Ekiden". Unfortunately, TIU (Tokyo International University) has never taken pate in the race. But many Japanese people watch the race on TV. This year I went to watch the race with my dad. Hakone Ekiden has many impressive dramas every year. You should read this too!! It's about this year's race.
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/sports/20060104TDY20005.htm
I love this sports "Ekiden". I hope it will be famouse all over the world, and Ekiden will be one of the Olympic sports someday.

January 3rd, after I watched goal of Hakone Ekiden on TV. I'll go to Narita airport. It's not reoson for I'll back to the U.S. I wanted to go though. Why did I go to airport, because I wanted say good-bye for Jaris. I know some of you know him. He is a Willamette student. He was in Japan as abroad student. He back to his home (Hawaii) at the day. We could hang out once in Japan after I came back to Japan. We should do more though. Anyway I went to Narita airport since I came back to Japan. Then I met his parents and said good-bye and promised "see you again". It was same as I did to you before I left U.S.

Oh, by the way, some of you already add my AOL Instant Messenger for yours. Thanks. I really enjoy to chat with you!! And some my friends told me your screen name. But I don't know how to add yours. I could add yours if you request for mine. So please add mine first, my screen name is "masahirocrazy". Then I could permit.

I'll write about my coming age of ceremony soon. I had the ceremony last Sunday.
I'll write and update my pictures soon.

Bye. Comment me!! Be Crazy!!!
Crazy-Masa.(^.^)

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I know you haven't met 2006 yet. But here is 17 hours earlier than U.S. So here is 2pm January 1st 2006 now. (U.S. is 9pm December 31st 2005.)

How are you doing?? I'm still cough. It is getting better than when I wrote last LiveJournal.

I went to bed 7am this morning and I got up just now. So I slept 5 hours,,, that's ok for me. hehe
I celebrated new year with my parents at home, then I got call from friends (baseball friends). I went to shrine and pray. (That's big Japanese culture!!) Then we went to Japanese bar and drunk and ate. But, I have a low alcohol tolerance, and you know, I'm already crazy without drunk. Then I went to friend's house then talk talk and talk. hehe(^^)

Well, as I said in last journal, I went to trip to Chiba prefecture. It was really fun. I went to coast and aquarium. I ate very good foods and I could see beautiful sunrise. Finaly I went to Kashima city in Ibaraki prefecture, the city has my favorite soccer team "Kashima Antlers". I went to their team store. I wanted to add some pictures in this LiveJournal, but I don't know how to do it.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!! "AKEMASHITE OMEDETO" (in Japanese.)
Talk to you soon.
Masahiro crazy kun(*^_^*)

Last few days at Willamette. (memory of 2005)

Dear all of my sweet friends (friends is “Tomodachi” in Japanese).
I am Japan almost one week. Today, I write about what did I do last few days at Willamette and after I came back to Japan so far.

Last week at Willamette (Dec 10th - 18th)
On Dec 10th, we had TIUA Christmas party. It was fun. End of the party, I got TIUA year book. It and my 2nd year book (huge message board) have sooooooo many messages from YOU now. The year book and message board are my treasures now!! Thanks a lot.
On Dec 11th through 15th, I hung out with awesome friends as last memory before I go back to Japan. I chatted with Baxter crazy friends, I went to bowling with intramural staff members, I hung out!!
On Dec 16th, it was day of Closing Ceremony. (;_;) it is crying face in Japanese chat.
Well,,, I couldn't believe to finish TIUA program. But finally, TIUA sang a song. It was Japanese chorus song. The name was "Tabidachi no hi ni" which means "The day of go forth" (Does it make sense?). Anyway the song is famous for graduation ceremony in Japan. I sang the song when I graduated junior high school. Then I cried a lot. Anyway, so when we sang it in TIUA closing ceremony I almost cried. But I was very satisfied with this year. So I was sad and happy. Also I was happy because some my Willamette friends ware the ceremony. Thank you for coming!!(^o^)
After closing ceremony, we had reception. Then I saw all TIUA professors, staff, my Tomodachi family, and Willamette friends!!! I talked, took pictures, got sign and message for my year book. Thank you for great time.
On Saturday 17th, most my friends left to home the day. So I had to say good-bye, and see you again to many friends. Soooo sad. The night, I hung out with Mara and Kpoe until after 2 a.m. It was last good memory at Baxter. (Baxter was my home!! I love BAXTER.) Mara and Kelly asked me about my abroad. I could retrace this year. I think I could improve as not only English learner but also man. I challenged a lot of things, I thought many things deeply even I couldn’t speak English well, and then I got many great memories and friends. As I said, I could improve my English compare to one year ago, but I still need studying English. I would make a mistake a lot. So how can I keep studying English? The answer is “Keep in touch with you!!”
On Sunday 18th, I left BAXTER at 6:45am. I was so sad to leave there. Then we (TIUAs) met Cat Cavern for last breakfast. At 7:30, time to get bus and leaving from Willamette. Some Willamette friends, TIUA staffs were there. I promised everybody "See you again. I'll come back here, you should come to Japan." I thought I cried, but I didn't. Actually I couldn't cry because I couldn't believe I leave from Willamette. My feeling was strange during I went to Portland airport. I felt like I just short trip. I passed freeway 5 a lot, because, you know, I went to Seattle 8 or 9 times. hehe. (CRAZY!!) So then I thought I go to Seattle again… After I got Portland airport, I said “good bye and see you in Japan” to TIUA friends who will go to NY or other travel and Katherine. She came to airport with us. Our plain time was 12p.m. But it was late, we left Portland 1p.m. Then we flew 9 hours. So we arrived at 10 p.m. on December 18th in Japan. However Japan was 3 p.m. on December 19th. Because of time difference!!! Japan is 17 hours earlier than Oregon. (Although, it will be 16 hours during summer time.)

Well actually I wanted to write about after I came back to Japan too. But I have to go to bed soon. It is at 1:30 a.m. now. Since today (I mean today’s morning) I’ll go to travel with my family until 29th. I’m so exciting. We will go to Chiba prefecture. It is next to Saitama prefecture which I live. So it is not long trip but it will be fun. I’ll write here about this trip when I’ll beck to home.

Talk to you soon!!
Please write some comments.

Have a great day….
December 26th 8:30am in Oregon.
December 27th 1:30am in Japan.
Masahiro-Crazy-Kun.
